Always been fascinated by hand gestures, I'm entranced whenever I see people 'signing'. I wonder what the original meaning of the gesture in this old phtograph was.

It's looks to me like a benediction but the net is inconclusive.

or it symbolises a rectum !

Oldsmiths - again . . . . .

That is very difficult to do in terms of the performativity of writing a piece of scholarship. Particularly difficult because scholarly work is perhaps the most preeminent mode of writing seriously – it is a focused form of reflective activity: You spend a lot of time doing it, researching for it, thinking about it, writing it. Theorizing is such a serious business. To some large degree I am embedded in that serious machine. After going through my education, and the projects and writing that I have done, there is a level at which I become a subject of that serious scholarly machine. The question then is, what room is there for negotiation or movement? The answer to that may reside in thinking of genres of writing other than the scholarly monograph. 

Sutapa Biswas

Sutapa Biswas was the last of the artists giving a talk about their work before the Easter break, though it was already a few weeks ago. 


First off she got my admiration for clear speaking, how few realise they can't be heard when they are facing the screen and not the auditorium. Rattled that the next lecturer was psycho about being delayed. we got qa whistle stop tour of her background - I won't forget the image of the Punjab agriculturally poisoned after partition. It became a bit unclear after that (I don't have my notes on me) though an audio piece in the Pitt Rivers museum stood out, and a video with her son and a horse.

I could have listened to her all day.


This was supposed to be an attempt at some writing, but I have to go and walk the dogs. Ho hum.

Never got to see this - but was interested in two identical performances, one filmed long ago, the other live and in the present. Not that I got to see it - the review came out on the last day of performance. The one video I've seen didn't look very meaty - but I managed to find it all the same - now back to bed with Edmund Burke, Joseph Adisson will have to wiat. . . . .
